WHAT A LADY REALLY LOOKS FOR ON A DATE

With Valentines coming up at the weekend, if you've made plans we're sure you have some fantastic surprises lined up for that special someone. We also thought you might like to hear a few thoughts of what your lovely lady might be thinking, so here's a little guide to what might be on her mind and how to avoid some not so obvious pitfalls.

We're generally up for surprises...

But not if it means being uncomfortable all night, or feeling like a sore thumb. Don't give it away totally, but if we can kick it up a notch and dress up, drop a subtle hint. It's actually fun to have an opportunity to now and again. Equally, if you're going somewhere laid back make sure we don't dress up to the nines - we'll feel totally out of place and self-aware. And if there's a lot of walking or cobbles involved, let us know - or have a strong piggyback game.

Try not to go off the deep end...

Especially if you haven't been dating too long - it can seem a little intense. The same goes for flowers. A lovely gesture, but best delivered where we can take them home and put them in water. Nothing sadder than a battered bouquet that's been from pillar to post all night, not to mention the self-consciousness that comes with being the recipient of said blooms. Where do we put them? Which of us carries them? Do they sit under the table or do we wait for a waiter to offer some water for them? What about public transport? The (supposed) attention can be daunting! If in doubt, a single, delicately wrapped red rose is just perfect. Understated and classic.

Carry mints..

And offer it to her if you're having one. The only thing worse than having someone go in for a kiss with funky breath, is the absolute horror that you might be the one with it. We don't want that fear. Share!

Manners go a long way...

Don't go overboard though. Holding doors, helping with coats and pulling out chairs is a little rare and very appreciated. Putting napkins on a lady's lap is a little too much.

And lastly...

Have a plan. Hey, this might not think this is going anywhere further than a drink, or dinner, but have a plan for every scenario just in case. Make a mental note of nearby late night classy cocktail bars if you decide to grab a nightcap after dinner. Drinks going better than you expected? Memorise a couple of local small plates restaurants to grab a swift bite to eat without a reservation. You'll look cool, collected and informed. Whatever you do, don't rattle off a list - it might come across a little too planned out!

For a few ideas of my personal favourites, head to the 'Places to Go' section of the site - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Happy Valentines!
