THE LONDON SHELL CO.
THE LONDON SHELL CO.
On a chilly late December evening when every pub in London was heaving with festive revellers, DC stepped onto a floating oasis in the form of the London Shell Co. Their carefully restored canal boat docked next to Paddington's picturesque canal is London's latest seafood restaurant. A stone's throw from Paddington station and a lovely brisk walk from Little Venice, this is dinner with a difference.
Siblings Harry and Leah Lobek took the leap after a few wildly successful supper club events to set up their own floating restaurant, themed of course around the wonderful pairing of seafood and wine. Both passionate and knowledgeable, it's no wonder that it has been a stunning success, their fantastically priced dishes are simply superb and perfectly matched glass by glass.
Over the course of 2.5 hours we enjoyed not only award winning food and wine, but a beautiful ride along the 200 year old London canal system, taking us from the Sheldon Square moorings on a leisurely cruise to Camden and back. As their unique mobility allows you to enjoy a constantly changing view, it's an ideal place to people watch as you float along. The winter's night was bitterly cold outside but we were cosy and warm looking out, and can imagine that it would be just as fun on a balmy summer's evening.
A selection of small plates for lunch (served between 12 and 2.30pm) start at just £2, but definitely consider mixing and matching a few of the delicious Small Plates and Bigger Plates, which at £5 and £10/12 each make a lovely overview of the skills and flavours from the kitchen. A few to note are the Mussels, Cockled & Squid Seafood Salad, Charred Gem Lettuce & Potted Brown Shrimps, Butter Poached Skate Wing with Anya Potatoes and Greens - and who could resist a Carlingford Oyster at just £2? They were just fantastic. In fact, we were very impressed by the entire menu, obviously everything had been meticulously prepared and the thought and presentation that went into each dish was top notch.
Favourites from the lunch menu make an appearance on the dinner list, and a lovely touch on the seasonal menu is a welcome drink of spicy mulled wine - a nice way to warm up! In fact one of the main selling points is their extensive knowledge and application of wine. Leave yourselves in their capable hands.
Another thing we enjoyed was our hosts' excellent manner - checking in on tables, topping up glasses and sharing anecdotes brought a welcome intimacy to the experience and it felt even more special. To note - the boat is docked for lunch, and takes to the water for the evening service only.
So if you're a seafood lover then absolutely do try the The London Shell Co., we were highly impressed and plan to visit again soon.
